phm update and a stocking started….

Is it really the third Thursday of February, already?  My!  How time does fly!  Tonight at 9pm marks the monthly update at Primitive Handmades Mercantile.  I have two Spring inspired pieces to offer.

First is this little rabbit pull toy.  Antique bone buttons and vintage casters make this one fun!

I love this design from Robin of Bird in the Hand Primitives!  I backed it with ticking and stuffed it tightly with crushed walnut shells.

If you’d like, you can visit my shop, and many others, by clicking here.

I’m working on a new stocking…..

So far, it looks like this.

We’re still buried under snow, but it’s supposed to warm up a bit this weekend.  I’m ready for Spring!

wishing you health and happiness….

stockings… they’re not just for christmas anymore…. and a pattern from cathy

I love making Christmas stockings, but Christmas only comes once a year ~ so what’s a girl to do?  There’s only one solution… make stockings for every holiday and season.  I have three Halloween/Autumn stockings in the works currently, and I’m having a ball!

One of my favorite designs is from Lori Brechlin of Notforgotten Farm.  This White Witch is right up my alley, and it’s the perfect size for a little stocking.

This is another design from the talented Robin of Bird in the Hand Primitives.  I adapted it a bit for a stocking.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Then I added some stocking stuffers….OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I think stocking stuffers are the reason I love stockings so much!  I backed and lined this stocking with ticking…OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

…which is the same ticking I used to back the stocking stuffers.  Antique bone buttons and a little pocket finish the fun.

I’m excited to try my hand at Thanksgiving stockings next.  Here’s a design from Cathy Sowers of Four Ewe Farm.  She’s the one that does all those fabulous three-dimensional pieces I’ve been showing you, and she generously sent this pattern to me with her permission to share it with you!

I think this will make a great stocking!  Thank you Cathy!  If you use Cathy’s design, please giver her credit.

Enjoy these autumn days!

’twas the night before christmas….

Well, not exactly.  I mean, here it is, the middle of January…. not exactly the night before Christmas or anything like it.  In fact, I completely missed Christmas and New Year’s, here, in the blog-o-sphere… ah me.  However, it’s never too late to send warm wishes, so, Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, and Happy Holidays!

Naomi wrote and asked me if I’d ever published the Valdani colors I used for Robin Leuschen’s, “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas” punch needle.  Do you remember that project?  Here it is:OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I never did share my palette with you, so just to set the record straight, this is the complete list:

jp6 (muddy pots) ~ Santa’s outfit
5 (ecru) ~ Santa’s beard and trim, stars, reindeer’s antlers
6 (natural) ~ berries on the vine
p4 (aged white) ~ vine, moon, 1822, Santa’s face
h205 (ancient gold) ~ reindeer, sleigh runners
p5 (tarnished gold) ~ words, reindeer collars and reins, sleigh
h212 (faded brown) ~ eyes
m1001 (vanilla sky) ~ background
The lamb’s tongues around the edges are the colors used in the design.

You can find Robin’s patterns by visiting her blog, Bird in the Hand Prims ~ click here.  She has some fabulous new freebie patterns on her site right now!

My camera isn’t working…..  well, it’s working, it’s just not WORKING.  I mean, I can take pictures with it, but they come out very unsatisfactorily (which reminds me of the grades I used to get in High School :~>), so I don’t have any new photos to share.  Time to shop!

Several of you have asked about how I age my pieces (thank you for your interest!).  As soon as I get a new camera, I’ll try to put something together to show you!

Until then, wring every bit of enjoyment out of each possible moment!

let it snow…..

Over in our neck of the woods it’s downright…..

COLD!  “They” are calling for up to 9″ of snow in West Michigan before nightfall tomorrow.  Must be time to build a snowman!

For now, I’ll keep him inside with me where he can watch the snowflakes drift outside the window.

Until next time, be warm and happy!

angel redo….

I made this Angel Sampler ~ design by Robin of Bird in the Hand Primitives ~ a year or so ago.  I stuffed it, and added two little birds for company, then mounted it on an antique trunk strap and one caster.

original

original

This was lots of fun!  But, she seemed rather forlorn, I mean, one little wheel and no place to go.  I decided she needed a facelift. So, I took her and her birds off the wood strap and looked at her for a while.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I wanted her to be a pull toy, so I covered a piece of discarded wood with homespun and sanded it well, added a little distressed tag and rusty bell as the “pull”…..OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

….mounted the birds on some chippy spools and added four antique porcelain wheels.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Tomorrow, Friday, is the Primitive Handmades Mercantile May update.  I think I’ll add this little angel to my shop. :~>

If all facelifts were this painless, I’d have one, too!

g is for giraffe, rise and shine, early posy crossroads, phm….

Whew! that’s a long title for a post, but I’m playing catch-up.

Let’s start with, “g is for giraffe”.

"this one?" ~ellis

“this one?” ~ellis

Yep, that’s the one, Ellis.  Flip it over, please…

g is for giraffe

g is for giraffe

G is for Giraffe turned out to be a biggie.  It measures in the neighborhood of 10″ long x 8″ wide ~ much larger than I had intended, but I really wanted to have a mama and a baby giraffe, so the pattern grew.  Speaking of patterns, you can find both the pattern and the original of G is for… on my etsy shop ~ click here, if you’d like.

Next up, Rise and Shine!

I guess that’s asking too much of Otis….

Rise and Shine, too, is there, in my etsy shop.  Both pattern and original are available.  Want to check them out?  Click here.

I finally finished Robin Leuschen’s ~ Bird in the Hand Primitives ~ Early Posy Crossroads…

Finally, this Friday, tomorrow in fact, is the February update at Primitive Handmades Mercantile.  Here’s what I’m offering this month.

three little sheep

You can stop by my PHM shop to see this flock starting tomorrow, Friday February 21.  Click here to get there.

And now, after all this work, I think I’ll join Lilly, who knows exactly what to do after a long week…..

Wishing you a restful and happy weekend!

Lilly was a marvelous assistant…

“see? all you need are some needle-sharp claws.” ~ lilly

Because of all the claws and curiosity that reside in our abode, we don’t have a large Christmas tree.  However, we do have two small feather trees that perch high above the floor, out of reach of paws and claws.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

These trees hold my grandmothers antique ornaments.  Ellis is in charge of tree trimming…

"ta da!" ~ ellis

And, where is Otis all this time?

"i have no shame." ~ the oatbran

“i have no shame.” ~ the oatbran

I can’t say I blame him.  Given the choice between a muscle relaxing massage or hours of cleaning and decorating, there’s no question which I’d choose.

whatever you decide to do today, enjoy it to the utmost!
